Holiday Day 12 – Tourlenc Valley

After last night’s rain today dawned bright but a little windy. Our start was somewhat relaxed, as we had had a long day yesterday. I know that I will have little sympathy from those of you at work but it is exhausting being on holiday! We wanted to explore the valley behind Mount Ventoux, which we had been to before but never spent time in. It is an easy drive from our cottage, and today the temperatures are ideal for exploring.

We drove over a pass to drop down into the Tourlenc Valley with the looming presence of Mont Ventoux in front of us. Perched on the valley side is the small village of Brantes. There we found a small auberge by the side of the road where we had a brilliant sandwich lunch sitting at an old stone table. It was a beautiful peaceful setting that will probably tempt us back later next week.

The village itself was entered through a small arch that is only suitable for a small donkey and cart. The streets in the village became smaller and smaller with barely a room for two people to pass, a very uneven surface. Every now and then there is a stupendous view over the valley and of Mont Ventoux. We later explored the village of Monbruin that was almost a carbon copy.

On return to the cottage after a quick swim, it was a walk to the village to try another one of the small restaurants in the square. Again we had a lovely meal in the open air. Then back to the cottage for a fiercely completive game of Scrabble. Elbows were being sharpened. Another great day in Provence.
