Last Day on Shelter Island

Traditionally the end of a holiday is a time for reflection. When one looks back on the holiday it high and low points while looking forward to life back at home, in this case the English winter.

Well the holiday has done what we asked of it being extremely restful. Firstly the weather has been magnificent. Hot sunny days followed by slightly cooler evenings. The cottage that we rented is beautiful and very comfortable. With a wrap round porch it has been ideal for outdoor living. The surroundings despite having other houses close by have been very peaceful. So we have had the opportunity to undertake lots of reading. I have completed my NYMR signalman’s exams although I am still waiting for them to be marked. I have made a start on my university reading. There has been plenty of opportunity for quiet walks. Marion looks very brown and relaxed.

We have eaten great seafood; Marion declared the calamari that she ate tonight as the best of her life. I had crab cakes followed by a very tasty lobster roll. We also discovered that Long Island produces very respectable wines and some interesting beers.

It was great to see Karin and Rob last weekend and enjoy their company along with some challenging arguments.

So we will travel home refreshed ready for a busy autumn.
