Seize the Moment

I am already finding that this blog is not turning out as I had planned and expected, it much more reflects the unpredictability of my daily life and thoughts. Those of you who know me well will realise that this is anathema to me. For example I have planned and booked all the family holidays for next year. From a spring weekend in Majorca to our annual weeks break in Alnmouth. I think it is a reflection of the new phase in my life that I am able to seize the opportunity as it comes along.

So after a couple of days of strong very cold winds, today dawned bright and sunny though still cold. So what better than to get out walking in the North Yorkshire Moors National Park. Marion drove me to Ravenscar from where I walked back home a distance of some nine miles. Ravenscar is 660 feet above sea level and situated high on cliffs, for some reason the Edwardians though it would be a good idea to build a resort there. Although doomed to failure it is still possible to see the street grid of the resort. The views across Robin Hoods Bay today was fantastic.

I turned my back on this and walked towards Scarborough. I have walked this way before and seen many sheep grazing in the fields but never animals like these three. I may have been surprised but these three just looked at me and then carried on munching.

Even though it is almost the middle of winter I was glad of my sunglasses, as the sun was very bright. The great thing about the old railway line that I was walking is that you come across the Victorian architecture that is still very much intact. You can almost imagine the trains crossing here even though this last took place in 1965 almost fifty years ago.

Around the halfway stage I got this great view across Hayburn Wyke.

For the first two hours I only saw two other people, it was just fabulous. Unfortunately at this stage my camera phone had a glitch so there are no more photos, hooray you say. I had an absolutely great morning and the feel good factor has lasted for the rest of the day. So today’s moral is seize the moment!!!

  1. Keep it going, Nigel! These posts, as you, are interesting:). This one reminds me of "Rings of Saturn" by WG Sebald. At first I was intimidated by his brain... the first chapter was a shock of new references and an introduction to his style of seemingly random, but much more clever than that, sprawling stories of art, literature, history and philosophy. All interspersed with photos and descriptions of his walk around the south of England. Walking meditation... as close as some of us with lively brains get to "thinking of nothing".
