This afternoon the sky retained its light until
almost 5pm, now I know this observation will attract ridicule from my son who
thinks we are obsessed by sunrise and sunset, but it will frame the rest of
this blog. Incidentally whatever happened to lighting up times, in every diary
that I owned there was either a table or time on that day that specified when
you had to switch the car headlights on. Is this no longer important, has the
law changed, or is it simply that I do not use a paper diary anymore. Grateful
for any insights here.
The problem with England at this time of the year is
the shortness of the days, particularly accentuated by the greyness first thing
in the morning and the late afternoon. Now I could simply let this get me down,
(see yesterdays blog), or I could you my tried and tested coping strategy.
Let’s think about the sun and the travels that we are planning for in the
summer.
So this afternoon was taken up with a virtual tour
through France. The topics ranged from a discussion on the best route from the
Vosges to the Southern Alps, the name of the restaurant that we had noticed a
queue for in the town of Seguret last summer, and crucially the logistics of
wine tasting/transportation across Europe in our Mini Convertible. Marion
thinks a minimum of three cases can be stowed, and proof of her seriousness is
prepared to reduce her clothing allowance to accommodate this. Me I wonder how
we will be able to preserve the wine that we buy in Alsace for a further three
weeks of holiday. (Our friends who are with us for a week may play a part
here). In essence who cares, but through our front window streamed the sun of
Provence turning everything pale ochre.
The other great thing is that the possibilities are limitless;
the plans are made in the knowledge that the sun will always be shining, and
the driving conditions fantastic. Even better the Euro has declined to 1.29
against the pound, though I doubt that we will be stopping in Switzerland!!!
And then are thoughts turned to the US, the farm stands of northern Long
Island, the microbreweries of Greenport, the long idle autumn days, and hosting
the Vermont Chapter of the Boro Supporters Club. Wow it is already June in
Scarborough!!!!!
