I have just read an article in our local paper that
has disturbed me, and seems to me to be a typical case of NIMBYism. It referred
to a proposal to build 10 flats locally for use as a women’s refuge. I am
unclear whether these are conversions or new build; however this is irrelevant.
This complex would be equipped with fencing, CCTV, and security. This is of
course has provoked outrage led by our local Conservative Councillor focuseing
on the mental damage that this might cause to neighbours of the proposed
development.
I felt particularly disturbed at this reaction, and
it does I think show all that is wrong with some elements of this country. It
would seem that the ideal is to live in little eco-systems with people of the
same background and outlook. There is no outward embracing of difference, nor
is there compassion for those less fortunate then ourselves. Now I know that
the predominantly the neighbourhood in question consists of assisted living
retirement flats. We know that one of the main problems of elderly people is loneliness
and lack of stimulation, and that the women in the refuge probably lack basic
family structures.
So instead of looking on the juxtaposition of these
communities as a threat lets embrace the opportunities that it might give on
both sides. I know that when my mother was well into her eighties she liked
nothing better than supporting a mother and toddler group, even if this was at
the level of pouring out orange squash. It was great for her to read stories to
young children. On the other side by definition many of the women in these
flats will not have family close by. Why could not they adopt a grand parent?
It would great for both sides, a genuine win/win. On a slightly humorous note
both groups have reason to be very observant, so older people in distress will
be spotted earlier, and any potential intruders will equally be identified. We
might even be able to do away with the CCTV, now that is a win win. So
residents of Newby look at the benefits to our community, do not be/NIMBYs, and
to our Councillor do something constructive for the community, a councillor is
not just for elections!!!!
