Why are Wetsuits Black?

Welcome to the first blog of 2015, I hope that it is the first of many. Well I feel that I must deal with one of the most significant questions of modern life. So let me step back, 2015 dawned grey and windy, what better to dispel those New Year blues but a brisk seaside walk. Well it was certainly a brisk walk with a gale force wind blowing out of the west, so walking along the beach was bracing. You can see from this picture that this is the case.

The conditions had brought the wind and kite surfers out. The speed that they were being blown across the water was amazing. There were even two girls swimming, well of course they did not have any wetsuits. Otherwise wetsuits were ubiquitous given the weather conditions a sensible precaution. All of the wetsuits were uniformly coloured black, as far as I could see there were not even any stripes. So why are wetsuits black, because if somebody gets into trouble surely it would be easier spot them if they had a high visibility wetsuit on. Secondly in an era where personalisation is the king, the black wetsuits are very uniform allowing no individuality. If anybody has an answer to this please let me know.

Despite these thoughts weighing heavily on my mind I thoroughly enjoyed my walk, the exhilaration of battling into the wind with the sand whipping around, and then the reward of turning round and being blown back the way that I had come. And even better when I arrived back a plate of cold cuts, a great way to start the New Year.
