I think that spring is always the time when I find
living in Scarborough most frustrating, and indeed irritating. It always seems
to me that the transition from winter to spring is very prolonged. Although the
days get longer very quickly the weather still seems to be stuck in winter
mode. We seem to be about three weeks behind the south of England in the onset
of spring.
This is partly because we live farther North and
partly because at this time of the year if high-pressure systems dominate they
drag in cold air from the east. So even with comparable places such as York we
in Scarborough are a few degrees cooler and certainly a lot windier.
I have to admit that I have a certain sang froid
regarding the weather, although I am as keen as anybody else to look at what it
is going to be like later in the week, I accept what I am given. I have always
believed that it is counter-productive to feel depressed about the weather, as
practically there is nothing that I can do about it; apart from I suppose
jetting off to warmer climes. I am lucky in that I have the clothing to cope
with most weathers, so if I wish to go walking in the rain I can without
suffering too much discomfort, apart from the impact of rain on my glasses. I
can break-out my shorts on those hot days. Indeed I can remember when I stayed
in London, the hot humid city days were really unpleasant particularly at night
with there being no practical way of cooling down. So I always warn the weather
pariahs to be careful what they wish for.
There are also the compensations of bad weather, when
I can plan to undertake indoor activities, usually those that have been put off
for some time. It also makes those times spent in the fresh air more precious. Last
night I quite enjoyed lying in bed listening to the quite strong wind whistle
round the house. So I would urge you to make the most of whatever weather is
thrown at us, enjoy because you sure as hell cannot change it.
If it's any consolation it is no nicer in the far south! Rain and wind here.
