A Double Birthday Celebration

Today was a family occasion to celebrate two birthdays. Martha the youngest member of the family is five on Wednesday. It has been a big week for Martha as she started school. All seems well, although there was a minor crisis when there was no pudding at school lunch. Her big sister was adjusting to life in the junior school, or key stage 2 as I am told it is now called. Makes me feel very old.

The celebration was a lunch at the Pipe and Glass, a superb restaurant near Beverley. What was striking was how well the children’s dishes were prepared; they were as artistic as the creations for the adults. The food was great and it was lovely that the family was all together. There were two rousing choruses of Happy Birthday as and as the oldest I had the privilege of blowing out the celebratory candle. The conversation and the wine flowed copiously and everybody had a great time. I suspect that the grandchildren might sleep well on the way home.

On the first day back from our walk it is as though my legs will not stop walking. Running a couple of errands I have already clocked up 20,000 steps today. I hope that this slows down later in the week otherwise I am going to be exhausted. Perhaps I will take a rest on my birthday.

Thank you to all the family who made it such a lovely day.
