Here
is the photo that we had all been waiting for, the triumphant finish at Newburm
on the banks of the Tyne on the outskirts of Newcastle.
In true tradition here
are some statistics from my walk. I covered nearly 200,000 steps in seven days,
which is about eighty miles and three thousand feet of climbing. Additionally
each male consumed about fifteen pints of beer, this is an estimate based on
observation and is not scientific. There was some great walking and fine
friendship. Undoubtedly the hero of the walk was Ben, the springer spaniel who
actually covered three times more distance than is human minders. Here he is
seen outside a grooming parlour near the finish of the route. Somewhat cruelly
I thought Julie and Brian thought that a dog pamper would not be effective as
within five minutes he would be completely filthy again.

The final
day was a gentle wind-down, there was little climbing and the walking surface
was excellent. The weather stayed kind, indeed the sun shone for most of the
day. In the village of Heddon 0n the Wall we found an excellent café with
really friendly owners. The walkers can be seen enjoying their refreshment.

I
have learnt much about the Roman conquest of Britain and the incredible feat of
building a wall across a hostile landscape. I have enjoyed varied countryside,
some of which was downright spectacular. I have tasted many different varieties
of beer, and some interesting meals particularly in some lovely village pubs.
All in all it has been a great week roll on next year.
