Tango

A quick update while I still have good Internet coverage. Last night was a treat as we enjoyed a tango show. It took place in a theatre where the auditorium was laid out with tables looking onto a raised stage. It had an old fashioned feel helped by the mournful music being played in the background. We were served a meal, somewhat mediocre, but we had come with low expectations. Then the show began.

Raised above the stage was a seven-piece band led by two accordionists who were the dominant influence in the playing. On the stage six couples performed either as pairs or as a group. The dancing was amazing, displaying combination of rhythm and the physical dexterity. It was incredibly physical and sexually charged; it is easy to see why it originated as entertainment in brothels. Marion explained to me the uniqueness of the Argentine tango, apparently there are more lower leg movements. Too much Strictly Come Dancing!! I was surprised that there was not more foot stamping an exaggerated poses, however that is European tango.
There was also a male and female singer. They had great voices, I think their songs were sagas, but as they were completely in Spanish it was a little lost on us. As the performance did not start until 10pm it was a long day for use, so we were glad to have a lie in this morning before repacking our suitcases for the short trip to the ship.

As a final thought on Buenos Aires I have uploaded the mural of Evita described in yesterday’s blog. This is the one of her declaiming to the powerful.
