Well we will start here on the evening of Day 1.
Dinner was served in the hotel, a pleasant meal with an excellent local red
wine. We had a carrot and ginger soup, followed by salmon lasagne; the main
course was pork and a tiramisu for pud. Unusually for us we then got talking to some
fellow guests, it only turned out that the lady was the sister in law of
somebody I worked with at my last job. A small world just goes to show that you
should never be rude about anybody!
Well today dawned a lot brighter. We had an excellent
breakfast of cold meats and cheeses, with various breads. It was then off for a
railway journey. We caught the old train that travels through the mountains to
the town of Soller, which is on the north coast of Majorca. The trip was
magnificent, winding its way through tunnels and over viaducts. Once in Soller
we transferred to a tram, great to see that it was made in England in 1929.
This wound it’s way through the streets of Soller cheek by jowl with the market,
before going through the back roads of the town, ending up at the port. This
was a lovely little town that surrounded a natural harbour. It was by this time
really quite warm so it was necessary to sit outside with a beer and some
tapas.
All too soon it was time to return, instead of taking
the direct road home we traversed the north coast. The scenery is magnificent
and the roads very windy. The number of cyclists compounds the difficulty of
the driving. I now have renewed respect for the drivers of the support cars on
the Tour de France. Add to this mad motorcyclists and large motor coaches and
the driving is some of the most challenging in Europe.
Still we made it back to the hotel. Adjoining our
room is a lovely roof terrace, so we sat there reading and watching the sun go
down, and having another glass or two of wine. It was a great end to a really
good day. As you will see this blog is liberally illustrated with photographs,
most featuring Marion. You may have to wait until tomorrow as some have not yet been uploaded.
