Back Home – The Finale in Majorca

We arrived back home this afternoon from our long weekend in Majorca. We thoroughly enjoyed a very relaxing weekend. What made the weekend a success and what were the highlights?

Firstly being British we expected poor weather, in fact for the time of year it was great. On Saturday in particular it was warm enough to sit outside and soak up the sun while watching the world go by. On Sunday apart from a twenty-minute period we avoided the rain. Coming from the bleak end of winter in the UK it made a welcome change.

The hotel that we stayed at was ideal. It was set on a hillside overlooking the Majorcan Plain. The owners had converted a farmhouse and the outhouses into a beautiful public rooms and bedrooms. Our room had a lovely high ceiling space with wooden beams. It had a door out onto a lovely roof terrace, where we read after returning from our days out. The hotel was also well run in a lovely relaxed fashion. So there was an honesty bar, coffee was always available with some lovely little cakes. The breakfast buffet was lovely, very Spanish with meats, fish and cheese. Dinner was always well cooked and relaxed. Some great Majorcan wines as well.

We also love the rugged scenery of Northern Majorca. It is far removed from the “kiss me quick” atmosphere of the beach resorts, as it is possible to get. The scenery is rugged and even though distances are small, it has a feeling of remoteness. Small villages cling to the hillside with agriculture based on terraces. The hills drop directly into the pure blue sea. As it was out of season everything was quiet so it was easier to explore in peace and tranquillity.

Then of course there was an old train and tram ride. It was like going back to a bygone age, except the passengers were tourists rather than a few farmers on the way to market. The carriages were beautifully preserved, and as an added bonus the scenery was great. The tram winding its way through the crowded market was fantastic, literally cheek by jowl with the market stalls. You could smell the roasting nuts.

Even better the journey to and from Palma was on schedule and without event. Hard to think that this lovely island is only two hours from London. It was a great weekend.
