Well the weekend actually started yesterday evening,
Thursday. We drove to London to stay at an airport hotel. So we had a very
agreeable dinner in Canary Wharf. It is always refreshing to see the vibrancy
of London after coming from provincial Scarborough.
The reason that we stayed
over was that our flight was at 6.55am, that meant a 5am start, an unheard of
time for us at the moment. So it was up bright and early to City airport. A
very simple check-in and departure only a few minutes late. It is always an
exciting take-off from City as the runway is so short, the plane literally
powers up at the end of the runway before releasing the brakes.
Apart from a brief glimpse of the snow covered
Pyrenees Europe was underneath a blanket of cloud. Palma was dull and windy
when we arrived. Still we had a leisurely drive to the old town of Pollenca,
which is on the east of the Island. At this time of year this is a sleepy sort
of place centred on an old church and square where there are a number of cafes.
By this time we were ravenous so chose one with outside heaters and enjoyed a
good lunch. The waiter sussed out Marion asking whether she would like a brandy
in her coffee, remarkably she turned it down.
Then it was off to find our hotel down some real
rural back roads. The only danger were German cyclists, I assume they were
German because they insisted on owning the entire road. Well the hotel is a
cluster of farm buildings on a hillside along increasingly narrow roads. We
have a delightful room, and you can see from the photos the view from the
terrace. Not quite bathed in sun. Hopefully tomorrow is more promising when we
plan our trip on the railway.
Tonight we are looking forward to a quiet dinner, a
glass or two of red, and possibly an early night. Apologies a slow Internet means that I cannot upload the photos of today, will try tomorrow.
Marion looks divine - so happy for you both enjoying yourselves after the previous months! Regarding your German cyclists comment: it is amusing to us to watch you Europeans - whoops, sorry! - you English and Europeans remark about each other:). Your blog on inequality deserves a good response, which I will forward for your return. Love the thought provoking questions as well as the travelogue.
